Character Review: Professor Jordan Perry

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, the series introduced a new character.  He was the face of the company who made the ooze.  In the comic books this company was TCRI.  For the movie they wanted to use TCRI, though the name was already taken by a real company so they had to come up with a new name which made it TGRI.  When coming up with a character they named him Professor Jordan Perry.

The name of Professor Jordan Perry was a name that was changed many times.  They would pick a name, go through the New York City phone book and find a matching name, so they would have to choose a new name.  Todd Langen is the one who came up with Jordan Perry’s name.  He took the name from two co-workers from the show “The Wonder years”, Mark Perry and Jill Gordon.  Jill Gordon’s name was using the J from Jill instead of the G on the name Gordon and changing the second o to an a.   Making it so the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II now had its lead character for TGRI.

We only have the one movie to get to know Professor Perry through, so the character does not have much growth or even a background given.  He works for TGRI, which has been dumping toxic waste.  The company decides to clean up their mess and while doing so they find some over sized dandelions.  They want them removed and not found by other people.  Professor Perry was the face of the company as he was interviewed by April O’Neil.  Later, he was at the lab getting rid of the toxic waste with the last container in hand as he is kidnapped by the Foot Clan.

Professor Perry is forced to make two new mutants for the Foot, Tokka and Rahzar.  After helping create Tokka and Rahzar, he convinces Shredder not to kill the two young mutants who are mentally deficient.

When not in use by the Foot, Professor Perry is kept tied to a chair with duct tape over his mouth.   Which is how he was found when Donatello was thrown into the building.  Don freed him from the Foot and brought him to escape with them into the sewers, where Professor Jerry revealed that he knew how they were created.  This surprises the Turtles.  So they brought him to the lair where he explains the creation of the ooze.

Working with the Turtles, Professor Perry creates an anti-mutagen to take care of Tokka and Rahzar.  He shows up at the Turtles last battle in time to help with making sure that Tokka and Rahzar go through with their demutation.  After Keno gets the ooze canister away from the Shredder, Professor Perry took the canister.  This is the last time he’s seen, though there was a message left for him with the TV Station to say thanks for the help to the Turtles.

Through the movie, it’s clear that Professor Perry is not a bad person, though has a strong love of science.  He likes to see the results of his work, he does not wish harm upon the people around him and he has a few secrets himself, yet knows that the best way to hide is right out in the open.  He had a nice personality and could of been a good friend to Donatello.  He had a good size role in the film, yet remains a bit of a mystery.

There is one major scene with Professor Perry that was cut.  At the end of the film, when he gets the canister of ooze, there was a scene showing that he was a Utrom, a TCRI/TGRI alien.  Though this was cut because many children would think that he was Krang.  This could of been an interesting story line for a third film, where the Turtles could learn about the Utroms.  Though with the way they ended it, this became the end of TGRI.

The role of Professor Jordan Perry was played by the actor David Warner.  He did a great job with the character and really pulled off the role.  Personally, I would've liked to have seen a new story line that went on with him in the movie and the TGRI story being explored more.  By cutting the end of the movie, they made it so that the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle films are the only media where the Turtles were created by toxic waste created here on Earth.

Why cutting this scene? Jordan Perry himself was probably confused with Baxter Stockman in the 1987 show.

I didn't make the choice to cut it, I wish they left it in.

The neat thing about 'loose ends' in the TMNT movies is that they made great starting points for fanfiction. :0) 'The story behind the story', or 'what happened next' themes give writers a reason to express their creativity.

On a personal note, I've always wondered what Perry did with that last canister. I mean, he met some pretty amazing individuals who were contrary to the monsters he was forced to create. Would he have disposed of the canister, or use it to create something similar to his new mutant friends? I think the scientist in him would want to destroy it, lest it fall into the wrong hands, but maybe his more emotional side might have him doing something else. Who knows, but I feel that they lost an interesting counterpart to the Turtles when they didn't bring Perry back with movie 3. Or 4, for that matter! LOL
