Kodak Moment #35

I got hundreds to thousands of photos through my life.  A lot of which would match up to stories here on Cowabunga Corner, but for one reason or another they are not chosen.  This does not mean that these photos are not worth sharing and do not hold stories of their own.  I would like to keep sharing what I can here on the site, so whenever I can I will share a photo and a story to go along with the photo.  If it’s a part of events that has been shared here, we will link back to the stories of the events themselves as well.  Hope everyone enjoys.  Today’s photo is inspired from the Nickelodeon episode "Dinosaur Seen in Sewers!" as it’s a photo from 1992 in the head of the Statue of Liberty.

As I watched “Dinosaurs Seen in Sewers!” this last Sunday, I saw as they went to the Statue of Liberty, a trip I did over 23 years ago.  The outside looked great, I loved seeing them there but then they went inside.  Before they got in, my head went into remembering a day oh so long ago.  When we were looking at the Statue.  Once inside I fought the idea of going up with my family as I saw the route up to the head.

There was this spiral staircase that went up the center of the statue.  While there was some other areas off to sides for workers, the stairs we had to take was that spiral staircase.  Deciding at the last moment to go all the way up with my mom, dad, sister and brother.  Getting on the staircase the first thing I noticed was that the steps was about half the length of my foot, to get a full foot on a step I had to have my foot sideways.  The railing was so short, I remember it being slightly above my knees.  Thankfully the center was that poll, which I glued myself too.  By time I realized how scary this was truly going to be for me, it was too late.  I was already started up the steps, and the way down is after you get up to the head.

I remember crying, and clinging to my mom, as we were mainly sitting on the steps scooting upward.  I fought my newly found fear of heights and I was loosing.  While Miki was dancing and singing for the security cameras, she had no fear.  In the end, I do feel like I won because I can say that I went up to the head of the Statue, and I made it out alive.  Though I also know that it also won, because I will never do that again.  When I heard the steps were closed, it did make me feel glad that I went up when I had the chance.  And I do feel for the many people who would love to do that trip.

This photo is taken in the head of the Statue of Liberty.  I am leaning on my mom, as Miki is standing next to us.  Clearly I am not really enjoying myself, I just wanted out of there at this point, but leaving was just as slow as coming.  As it took a long time to go down those stairs.

While watching “Dinosaur Seen in Sewers!” I saw the stairs and pathways that they had to fight on inside the Statue and all I could think was “I WISH! that wouldn’t have scared me!”  It threw me out of the episode for a moment as the memory of that trip rushed through my head.  I do believe I would’ve been more impressed if they had the inside of the Statue look as I remember it, that right there would’ve been amazing!

Have you ever been up to the head of the Statue of Liberty?  Have you visited since the stairs have been closed?  Tell us about your visit!  All Memories, comments and questions welcomed below.
