TMNT Real Location for Lair

In Season four of the 4Kids Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, the Turtles moved from their lair that they had in the first season.  This was the first time that the Turtle’s lair was given a real location in New York City.  Anyone who watched the series got really use to their home they had for the first three seasons, and watching it get destroyed was a jaw dropping moment.  I remember the first time they showed the new location, it did not hit me that there could really be a location that looked like that.  It was a castle with a small body of water near it, the camera went up from the water over the castle and down to a street on the other side of the castle showing a sewer entrance. What an interesting view of this new location.

I soon learned that the castle was real location! So on a trip to New York City, I had to explore and find this location.  I tried finding it on maps, though with no luck I started at the south end of the park and walked north.  I would ask people along the way, do you know anything about a castle here in Central Park.  Though most people I asked said there was no castle in Central Park.  I did not give up the search as I even went off the beaten path, walked through woods and felt my feet getting sore.  Before that day I never realized how big Central park was and there were a lot of times where I could not even see the city skyline around me.  It was as if I was out in the middle of nowhere, what an amazing park.

After hours of walking, I came upon the back of the castle. I ran up to it, so excited to finally see the castle.  It was amazing. The castle looked just like the one on the cartoon.  As I learned the name “Belvedere Castle”, I went in and learned that it was like a small museum on the inside.  There was even a framed staff that looked just like one that Leonardo gave Splinter.  The castle’s main purpose though was to keep an eye on weather as it is now a weather station.

Here’s a quote from their official website “Since 1919, the National Weather Service has taken measurements from the castle's tower with the aid of scientific instruments that measure wind speed and direction. In a fenced-in compound just south of the castle, other data such as the rainfall is recorded and sent to the weather service's forecast office at Brookhaven National Library on Long Island.”

It was so interesting to learn that this castle had a purpose to the city.  After learning about the castle I went up and looked outside to see the pond down below.  It was a nice size pond, with a pretty green area right next to it to sit and have picnics.  But then I realized there was things moving around in the water below.  Turtles!  Lots and lots of Turtles!  So I had to learn about the pond now.  I took as many pictures as I could at the castle, then I went down and around to the lower green area looking up at the Castle.  Where a sign was posted, “Turtle Pond”.   Not only did the Turtles get a location that is real, the name of the pond they were supposedly living under was “Turtle Pond”!

Turtle Pond is swarming with turtles swimming around, even an island covered in Turtles.  Talk about an amazing place to visit.  So relaxing.  So unreal.  A place so peaceful in the middle of New York City.  This has fastly become my favorite area of the city.

Ever since I found the castle, I make sure to visit it on every trip to the City.  I even got to use it as a background in an episode of Cowabunga Corner, where I interviewed TMNT fan and collector Rutger.  Each time I go to Belvedere Castle, I tell the workers there that the castle was in the 4Kids TMNT series. Most of the time this is news to them.  Though now I can also say I’ve seen Belvedere Castle in the Smurf’s movie.  I highly recommend this to be a stop if you’re visiting or live in NYC.

Have you ever been to Belvedere Castle?  Did you know it was in Ninja Turtles?  Is this a location you would be interested in visiting?  Please feel free to review, comment or ask any questions below in the comment section.  Please remember all email addresses are kept private.
